The hardest line in August came from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman: the 14/16-inch OLED touch notebooks are still aimed at late this year or early next year, and Apple is testing them on macOS 27.1. It does not mean the line has wafers booked. Treat it as optimistic software, pessimistic materials.

OLED is the change you will notice in a shop. iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad Pro already shipped it. Mac waited because large panels were expensive and power-hungry. Individual pixels can switch off, so blacks are cleaner, HDR has more room, and off-angle viewing is steadier. - Optimistic: late October 2026. Internal bring-up is on 27.1; consumer 27.1 points at late October; Apple likes that week for Macs. If DRAM locks in September, this is the tidy slot.
- Base case: November–December 2026. The mold is ready and software can ship, but first-wave units are storage-limited, so the event slides into the holiday replenishment rhythm.
- Conservative: January–March 2027, Apple's first event of the year. If the memory crunch holds, this is the back half of Gurman's window — the side he has called more likely since spring.
Ming-Chi Kuo still expects mass production in late 2026. Production start is not a store page. From a running line to channel fill is usually weeks. “Late 2026 MP” can mean a thin late-October sale or a stable January 2027 pipeline. My read: software leans late October; materials lean across the new year. Tell the team the orderable date is Q4 2026 through Q1 2027. Do not write 27 October on a slide.
6. Wait for MacBook Ultra, buy an M5 Pro now, or put the spike in the cloud?
Decide by job, not by affection for the name.
- You already sit on M4 / M5 Pro or Max and the complaint is the screen or the weight: wait. OLED, a thinner lid, and touch are the actual Ultra delta. Hold budget for Q4 2026 and keep an early-2027 fallback.
- The pain is compile queues, simulators eating RAM, or local models: buy a 16-inch M5 Max today or overflow the peak to a cloud Mac. Launch Ultra will not give you a faster chip in the same class.
- You are still on Intel or an 8 GB M1: do not burn another half year for Ultra. Golden Gate already dropped Intel; low-memory boxes will hit Siri AI and Xcode 27 first. Move to any workable Apple silicon environment.
- The team must prove macOS 27 + Xcode 27 in September–October: that is an OS problem, not a chassis problem. A spare test Mac or a day-rate cloud Mac is cheaper than betting the store-open date.
Think about ports before you romanticize thinness. A thinner lid often means one fewer HDMI or no SD slot. Today's Pro port set is four years of “plug in a display and a card.” If you live on those jacks, budget a dock while you wait. “More expensive” has never meant “more ports.”

Has the MacBook Ultra shipped? No. As of 28 August 2026 it is unannounced. The store name may still be MacBook Pro.
Will it appear at the September event? Not on current reporting. September is phones and the OS GA. The high-end notebook is a separate window.
Will it use M6? Launch rumors say M5 Pro / M5 Max. M6 Pro / M6 Max were reported cancelled. High-end M7 waits for the next chassis.
Will it be expensive? Yes, above today's Pro. The whole Mac line already moved up in June 2026. OLED plus touch has no “same price, new generation” precedent.

Even a late-October launch will not put high unified-memory configs on every doorstep. M5 Pro / M5 Max performance, macOS 27, and Xcode 27 do not need that OLED panel.
